The fascinating aesthetic experience of looking out to sea is not usually associated—at least not until now—with the serious consequences of certain processes on the ecosystem of the oceans. Drastic, and in some cases irreparable, changes and alterations are taking place right now in this blue landscape that has always enthralled us so much as a species; changes that are extremely important for the future of humankind—the warming of sea waters, widespread pollution, uncontrolled extraction of resources, destruction of the seabed. Seen from above, everything looks the same: a vast beautiful expanse of water. But below, the transformations are gathering at an alarming rate. Who knows whether our negligence will turn those oceans into large blue deserts.
