A Mãe e o Mar

Trasfoco: Fishing

In the world of fishing, the gender division in the organisation of work usually results in women being left behind on shore while men set out to the sea. It is very rare to come across communities that escape that division, and even more so to see seeing women occupying positions of command, like captains of a boat. However, in Vila Chã, a small area in the municipality of Vila do Conde (Portugal), there was a time when many women played those roles. Their names are still remembered today. They were fisherwomen who have a place in the memories of the oldest people. Now, when fishing has lost its relevance as a way of living, the love for that past time still lingers.
