In November 2005, the at-the-time conservative Interior Minister of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, visited a police station in the Paris banlieue after the first riots following the death of two young men who were escaping the police. Booed by the young people in the area, he uttered a statement that would have serious repercussions: \u201cI\u2019ll get rid of this scum.\u201d Over the following weeks more than 9,000 cars went up in flames in Paris and other cities around France.
