In November 2005, the at-the-time conservative Interior Minister of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, visited a police station in the Paris banlieue after the first riots following the death of two young men who were escaping the police. Booed by the young people in the area, he uttered a statement that would have serious repercussions: “I’ll get rid of this scum.” Over the following weeks more than 9,000 cars went up in flames in Paris and other cities around France. The young Arnaud refers to these incidents when justifying his own life of petty crime and his constant flight from justice that would take him to several countries in search of a decent life and the family affection he always missed and needed.
