Aral: pescando en un mar invisible
Trasfoco: Fishing
The Aral Sea is one of those places on Earth where humans have exemplified our power of total destruction. For millions of years it was the world’s biggest lake, and until the 1960s it occupied an area similar to Ireland. However, the uncontrolled diversion of streams and rivers to irrigate crops in Central Asia has turned the lake into a dry expanse of earth, dust and salt. The Aral Sea is barely a memory for those who once fished in its waters, the oldest surviving inhabitants of the place. Young people find it hard to believe in the reality of those memories. How can a person internalise the destruction of nature and of a whole way of life with it? Sometimes it is only a matter of time.
