Esquirlas
Official Section
On 3 November 1995, thousands of shells rained down on the town of Río Tercero in Argentina in scenes never seen before outside the context of a war that might justify such an attack. Soon it was revealed that the cause was an accidental explosion in the local military munitions factory, a few kilometres away. The disaster, in which several people were killed, was blamed on the negligence of one of the factory workers, but local knowledge suspected a corrupt organization behind the production and sale of arms in which the country’s president, Carlos Menem, was involved. A middle-class family records its day-to-day live in the town before, during and after the tragedy.
